Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint is small-batch powdered milk paint for furniture, wood, cabinets, and creative finishes—made for furniture artists, rule-breakers, treasure hunters, and anyone who'd rather create something original than make another piece that looks like everyone else's.
Mix it. Layer it. Distress it. Let it chip. Thin it into a wash. Blend your own colors. Milk paint gives you the freedom to create smooth modern finishes, beautifully aged surfaces, or perfectly imperfect pieces with a story of their own.
You're the artist. The paint shouldn't boss you around.
Paint with conviction. Create without apology.
Milk paint is a water-based paint that comes in powdered form and is mixed with water when you're ready to use it. Unlike conventional premixed paint, milk paint creates a uniquely versatile finish that can be smooth and modern, softly washed, layered and distressed, or beautifully aged and chippy.
Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint is made for furniture, wood, cabinets, décor, and creative projects for anyone who wants more creative freedom than ordinary paint can offer. Its rich pigments and customizable consistency give you the freedom to change the way you paint—add more water for a translucent wash, mix it thicker for texture and coverage, blend colors together, or layer shades to create depth.
The best part? Milk paint doesn't demand perfection. It rewards experimentation. Every brushstroke, layer, chip, and imperfection can become part of the finished piece.
That's why we love it. You're not just painting furniture. You're making something nobody else has.
Why Use Milk Paint on Furniture?
Milk paint gives furniture something ordinary paint often can’t: character, depth, and creative freedom. It can become smooth and refined, rustic and timeworn, softly translucent, heavily textured, or naturally distressed depending on how you mix it and how you apply it.
It’s especially beautiful on wood furniture, dressers, tables, cabinets, vanities, flea-market finds, vintage pieces, and upcycled furniture. Instead of covering every piece with the same predictable finish, milk paint lets the surface—and the person painting it—help determine the final look.
Because Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint comes in powdered form, you control the consistency. Mix it for traditional coverage, thin it for a wash or stain-like effect, layer colors for dimension, or experiment with texture and distressing.
There isn't one “right” way to use milk paint. That's the point.
Take the risk. Break a few rules. Make the piece yours.
Milk paint can be used to transform everything from flea-market finds to kitchen cabinets. It’s especially well suited to wood furniture and porous surfaces, where it can soak into the surface and create a beautiful, natural looking finish.
Use Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint on dressers, tables, chairs, cabinets, vanities, shelves, frames, décor, unfinished wood, and vintage furniture. Depending on the surface and the look you want, you can create anything from rich, solid color to a translucent wash that allows the character of the wood underneath to show through.
Painting a previously finished, sealed, or slick surface? Proper preparation and sometimes a bonding agent—can help milk paint adhere where it can't naturally absorb into the surface. We'll cover that below.
Old furniture doesn't need to become new furniture. It can become something better: yours.
You don't have to strip a piece of furniture down to bare wood before giving it a new life. With Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint, there's generally no need to use chemical paint strippers. If the existing finish is sound, simply clean the piece and lightly sand before painting. If the old paint is excessively peeling, flaking, or failing, however, the piece may not be a good candidate for painting without additional surface preparation. New paint is only as stable as the surface underneath it.
Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint is non toxic and VOC-free, so you can paint indoors without the fumes associated with many conventional paints and finishes. No opening every window just to paint a nightstand. No waiting for the weather to cooperate before starting your next project.
That also makes it a beautiful choice for projects throughout your home—from furniture and décor to baby cribs, children's furniture, and pet beds.
Skip the stripper. Skip the fumes. Keep the creativity.
Mixing Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint is simple. Start with equal measurements of milk paint powder and water—for example, ½ cup of powder and ½ cup of water.
But don't add all the water at once. Start by adding about half of the water to the powder and mix it into a smooth slurry. Depending on the paint color, you may need to add a little more water to get the slurry going. Once the powder is thoroughly incorporated, slowly mix in the remaining water until you reach a smooth, paintable consistency.
Think of it like making gravy. Starting with a slurry helps incorporate the powder smoothly before you thin it to its final consistency.
And remember, the equal-parts ratio is a starting point—not a creative limitation. Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint is meant to be experimented with. Add more water for a thinner, translucent wash, adjust the consistency for texture and coverage, blend colors together, layer shades to create depth, or add a little SoulStone Old-World Texture Additive for even more texture and dimension.
That's one of the best things about milk paint: you control the paint instead of the paint controlling you.
Mix it. Change it. Experiment with it.
Make it yours.
Milk paint and chalk-style paint are both popular for painting furniture, but they create very different experiences and finishes.
Milk paint comes in powdered form and is mixed with water when you're ready to use it. Its consistency can be adjusted, and the paint can interact differently with the surface underneath. Depending on the piece and your technique, milk paint can create smooth opaque color, translucent washes, layered finishes, texture, distressing, or the naturally aged and chippy look it's famous for.
Chalk-style paint typically comes premixed and ready to use, making it a more predictable choice when you want consistent coverage and a similar finish from one project to the next.
Milk paint asks you to participate a little more. You mix it. You adjust it. You see what it does on your particular piece and decide where to take it from there.
If you're looking for perfectly predictable, milk paint may not be your soulmate.
If you'd rather experiment than follow the rules, welcome to Junkyard Goddess.
If you've used other milk paints, you may have learned that a bonding agent is necessary when painting previously finished or non-porous surfaces. That's not usually the case with Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint.
Our reformulated milk paint was designed to have excellent adhesion on its own while still giving you the ability to distress and create the beautifully imperfect finishes milk paint is known for. We've even had it adhere to glass without a bonding agent.
For extremely glossy, slick, or lacquered surfaces, however, a little extra adhesion may still be helpful. hat's where Junkyard Goddess Magic Bond comes in. Add it when you're working with an especially difficult surface or simply want some extra bonding insurance.
On a tight DIY budget? Here's a little trick: a small amount of multipurpose extra-strength white glue can help improve adhesion on particularly glossy surfaces. It won't provide the water resistance or other benefits of Magic Bond, but it can give the paint some extra grip when adhesion is your main concern.
As with any unfamiliar surface, test a small area first.
Most projects? Skip the extra product. Mix your paint with water and start creating.
Because Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint comes in powdered form, you can mix only what you need and save the remaining powder for another project. No need to mix the entire package at once.
Coverage will vary depending on the surface, application technique, number of coats, and the finish you're creating, but here's a simple guide:
8 oz. — Up to 17 sq. ft.
A great size for small décor pieces, stools, trays, frames, and other smaller projects.
Pint — Up to 35 sq. ft.
A good choice for chairs, side tables, nightstands, and other medium-sized furniture.
Quart — Up to 70 sq. ft.
Best for larger pieces such as dressers, dining tables, armoires, and other substantial furniture projects.
A translucent wash will generally use less paint than multiple coats of opaque color, and porous surfaces may absorb more paint.
Not sure how much you'll need? When in doubt, choose a little more than your estimated coverage—especially if you're custom mixing colors or working on a large piece.
Mix what you need. Save the rest of the powder for your next idea.
No. We don't recommend using primer under Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint. Milk paint performs best when it can bond directly with the surface, and primer can interfere with adhesion.
For best results, start with a clean surface and lightly sand before painting. You don't need to strip the piece or sand it down to bare wood just lightly scuffing the surface helps give the paint something to grab onto.
If you're working with an extremely glossy, slick, or lacquered surface, additional adhesion may be helpful. That's when you can add Junkyard Goddess Magic Bond to your milk paint.
Clean it. Scuff it. Skip the primer. Then paint.
Yes. Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint can be used on many previously painted and finished surfaces. Because every existing finish is different, clean the surface thoroughly before painting and test a small area if you're unsure about adhesion.
No. Milk paint can create a chippy, timeworn finish—but it doesn't have to. Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint was formulated to adhere exceptionally well while still giving you plenty of freedom to distress your finish when you want to.
Depending on your surface and technique, you can create a finish that's smooth and modern, softly washed, layered and distressed, textured, or beautifully aged and chippy.
That's the fun of milk paint: you decide where the piece goes.
For furniture and other surfaces that will see regular use, we recommend protecting your finished milk paint with a topcoat. Your choice of finish can also enhance the color and change the final look and feel of your piece.
Junkyard Goddess Hemp Oil – Deepens and enriches the color of milk paint while creating a soft, natural matte finish. Hempseed oil is a drying oil, meaning it cures as it dries to form a protective finish. Of our two hemp finishes, Hemp Oil provides the greater level of protection and is a great choice for furniture and other frequently used pieces.
Junkyard Goddess Hemp Wax – Our aromatherapeutic finishing and polishing wax adds depth and a beautiful, lustrous finish while helping condition and protect the surface. Choose Lavender, Creamsicle, Nag Champa, or Unscented depending on whether you want a little sensory indulgence with your furniture makeover.
Both finishes are designed as non-toxic alternatives to conventional furniture finishes and are made without harsh chemicals, making them a natural finishing choice for Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint.
Want more protection? Choose Hemp Oil. Want that gorgeous waxed luster and finishing touch? Choose Hemp Wax.
Absolutely. Junkyard Goddess Milk Paint colors can be mixed together to create your own custom shades. Experiment with different combinations and proportions until you find something that's completely yours.
Because the paint starts as a powder, you can experiment with small amounts before committing to a larger batch.
There are no rules saying you have to use a color exactly as it came out of the package.
Consider the color chart a starting point.
